Property tax hike when renting a home in Michigan?

My wife and I are entertaining the idea of renting out our home, but she thinks that if we do, our property taxes (or some other tax/fee) will dramatically increase. Does anyone know if this is true in Michigan?

If it is a single family home your ad valorem taxes shouldn’t change. If the tax assessor learns the property is being rented, you may be assessed an intagable tax.

We are in Michigan and your friend is right. You can only receive the homestead exemption on your taxes on 1 property – your primary residence. Your rental home will be charged the non-homesteaded rate, which can be almost twice as much in taxes.
